La panca Nelson di Vitra è un classico del design degli anni '40 sviluppato da George Nelson, la cui formazione nel campo dell'architettura è visibile nel design pulito e funzionale della panca. Il fascino della panca Nelson deriva dai sottili pezzi di legno di frassino con spazi vuoti tra di loro. I pezzi sono tenuti insieme con giunzioni forti e sostenuti da due gambe angolari nere. Oltre che come seduta, la panca Nelson può essere usata anche come tavolino da appoggio o come tavolino per il salotto.

Designer
L’americano George Nelson (1908–1986) si laureò in architettura presso l’Università di Yale e, negli anni ’30, studiò a Roma, dove si familiarizzò con l’architettura ed il design europei. Dopo essere tornato negli Stati Uniti, Nelson iniziò a lavorare per l’azienda Herman Miller dove divenne ben presto Direttore del Design.
Durante la lunga carriera Nelson disegnò numerosi mobili e lampade molto noti. George Nelson lavorò per Herman Miller fino al 1972 e insieme a designer quali Charles e Ray Eames, Isamu Noguchi e Alexander Girard, creò le basi per le iconiche collezioni di Vitra. Tra i suoi design più famosi troviamo Nelson Bench (1946), il simpatico Marshmallow Sofa (1956) e un’ampia collezione di orologi (1948–1960), i più noti dei quali sono probabilmente Ball Clock, Sunflower Clock e Eye Clock.
